The Sims 2 Nightlife Expansion Pack Review

The Sims 2 Nightlife Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing Sims 2 on the PC since it was introduced and own all 3 upgrades. Now, I've bought everything available for the Mac to play when I travel. Frankly, I wouldn't want to play Sims 2 without Nightlife.
Dating is the most important capability Nightlife brings to the game. I find it tedious to build and maintain relationships with the base game. Dating lets you monitor both sides of a social relationship, and also tends to focus the participating sims on each other. This makes it easier to build strong relationships and to fulfill high-value wants and earn aspiration points. If you have lots of aspiration points, you don't have to resort to cheats to maintain needs or to keep sims from aging before you want them to. The first thing you'll want to do for any sim you play is to give them at least one strong dating relationship so they can top off their aspirations when they need to. Let's face it, it's easier to face going to work when you had a little hot romance the previous night.
The essential dating tool is a car. Now you can go out or drive to work in your own car. Picking up your date in a hot car immediately improves the date score. But the real reason for owning a car is that if two sims are seeking initimate reactions and a car is on the lot, chances are they'll want both WooHoo and WooHoo in Car, which nets you double rewards for a single interaction. If you have a car, a little time on a date can quickly make the sims' aspirations go platinum while building up lots of aspiration rewards that let you buy Energizers, Elixer of Love dispensers, and Thinking Caps. With those, you can make your sims accomplish almost anything you want.
Chemistry is a new Nightlife feature that can be a lot of fun. By defining Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs for sims, chemistry simulates what we all feel, greater attraction for some people, less for others. NPCs have their own Turn-On's and Turn-Offs, but can specify them for sims you play and change them when you want. When you let sims function autonomously, chemistry works with memories and other attributes to make their interactions more complex. When you control the sims, it's easier or more difficult to establish friendships and romances, depending on the chemistry they sims feel for each other.
New with Nightlife is the ReNuYuSenso Orb, which lets you change sims' Aspirations as well as their Turn-Ons and Turn-Offs. With the Orb, a sim can start out with a Family aspiration and change to a Knowledge aspiration when the kids are in school. In other words, your sims deepest desires can change as they mature. I use the Orb a lot.
Nightlife includes Downtown, which provides a many more destinations the sims can travel to, including restaurants, clubs, and bowling alleys. Sims 2, even with University, is a bit dull in terms of social destinations. You'll find dating a lot more interesting in Nightlife. You can also send sims on friendly outings. Outings are more challenging than dates since you're managing interactions between more than two sims, but they enable your sims to meet strangers and start building relationships with large numbers of people. When your sim is invited out on an outing, they'll arrive at a destination with several friends, some of which are likelyk to be strangers. If your sim is on a career path that requires lots of friends, outings can make it much easier to get the friendships started. (I still miss some of the things you could do in Sims 1 parks, such as sailing boats. In Sims 2, parks are pretty dull places by comparison.)
In summary, the emphasis of Nightlife is on sim's social lives. Relationships are richer and the range of social interactions is much more extensive. I'd hate to play The Sims 2 without Nightlife.

Fast Lanes Bowling Review

Fast Lanes Bowling
Average Reviews:

To be honest, owning a bowling game wasn't that high on my "must have" list, but I got this game as a stocking stuffer this year and was surprised at how much I find myself playing it. It has essentially become my new "solitaire," letting me play when I am bored and want to kill some time without getting into a 5 hour marathon. The production values are surprisingly good, particularly for a bargain priced game. The graphics, sound, and physics are all very well done. I kind of wish there were more "arcadey" (is that a word?) style modes of gameplay, but that might just be the console owner in me talking. Internet play might be fun, too, though bowling isn't exactly a head-to-head sport. You could practically play by e-mail, now that I think about it. A word of caution, though. The game can be very tough, and the need for accurate timing on the controls is a must. I find that if I have too many programs running on my computer it can cause the game to stutter a bit, making for missed throws. If you have a beefier system than mine (1 ghz, 256k of RAM, Geforce 2MX), you shouldn't have much trouble, if any. Overall, an excellent value, particularly if you like video game bowling.

This game is the most fun ever. I had this game in FL and spent hours playing it. Many hours I sat at my computer and played this game. I was an avid bowler and this just added to the fun. My 11 year old granddaughter can't wait to come to my house and play this game. I would recommend this highly as a fun, entertaining game. I would recommend this game for purchase from Amazon.

Black and White Deluxe Review

Black and White Deluxe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just recently got this game in preperation for B&W 2. When I first started playing it, I absolutely loved it and would have easily given it 5 stars. After playing it for a while, I got annoyed and overwhelmed at the micro management and would have reviewed it probably at about 2 stars. But now after getting used to it and 30 plus hours of play, I think 4 is right.

The game starts out with a very helpful tutorial that shows you the basic controls, how to cast spells, and taking care of the people. You later pick the creature you want and it helps you in training him and taking care of him also. After you get through that, you then go to a town where you will need to start your own civilization. This is where you may get frustrated because your people always need food, homes, children, and buildings. A smart thing to do is build plenty farms before bulding homes or children no matter how much they complain because eventually there will not be enough food in the few farms to supply the villige store (where the food and wood is stocked) so you will be constantly hovering over the store supplying food (very annoying). With the Deluxe version of B&W, it comes with several patches that fixes a ton of problems. One major issue that it will fix is that your wirshippers will not eat like horses any more so you will get to pay less attention to them. Install these before playing the game because it comes in as a HUGE help.

There are 2 things that kept me from giving this game 5 stars even after disliking it so much at first.
One is that it crashes every few times I play. Sometimes it will go for hours on end without a jitter but sometimes it will crash twice within 5 minutes. I am running it on a Windows 98 PC with 512MB RAM and an old NVIDIA Video card. The game is from 2001 so it does OK. I also installed it on my newer Dell PC that has 1.5 Gigs of RAM, Windows XP, and the newest ATI graphics card. I started an evil god on it and it has not crashed once. Some are saying that the game does not run on XP, but it does fine with me.
The second thing that kept me from giving 5 stars is the part of the game I am on now. I'm not going to say much to keep from ruining the game for some of you but this level of the game is really ticking me off. Every time I get a few buildings built they get burned!!! I dont have enough villigers to give me enough prayer power to constantly cast shield miracles because my people are getting stolen!!! I don't know what to do. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or not doiing something I should but it is really making me mad. Earlier in the game on another level, I had just gotten a big enough population to start to convert another village ( you have a realm of influence based on the amount of people that you have in your town. You connot do anything outside that realm. Therefore, the more people you have the bigger your influence realm will be). I was performing miriacles for them when I started hearing the word "death" and my conscience guy said that we were being attacked. I went back to my villiage and there was a lightning storm stricking my town center. Every time the lighting would hit it, it would catch on fire. My villiagers would run to put it out when another lighting bolt would hit, catching everyone around it on fire. They would die so more people would run to the fire to put it out and they to would be set aflame! It finally stopped dtorming but I ended up losing about 70% of my population with my influence realm very small again. After that I went to the setup menu in the game and downloaded the realtime weather that was happening outside my own home (it was snowing) so that did not happen again. This is a cool feature to use if you want to make the weather in the game be more realistic to what you are seeing out your own window.
This game has a very steep learning curve. It has a lot of micromanagement to deal with so you will never be sitting back watching things take place. I reccommend this game to one who has a lot of time and a ton of patience. So if you decide to get the game, have fun and good luck.

The Sims 2: Nightlife Expansion Pack Review

The Sims 2: Nightlife Expansion Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up my copy of Nightlife yesterday, as well as Prima's Nightlife Strategy book. The game is great. With this expansion, your sims have the opportunity to have enhanced social interactions with other sims. You can now see what sims are attracted to your sims. There is a new item in the relationship panel called "chemistry" and the sims with whom your sims have chemistry with are rated with a lightning bolt system - 1 bolt being low, 2 bolts being average and 3 being high. This helps if you're trying to get your sim a good match. You can also ask people about their skill levels, which will be helpful for me because there is nothing worse than picking up a sim who has low skills and thus contributes nothing good to the household.
You can now go out with groups of people instead of just one sim. This functions similarly to "throw party" in that the group outing is scored. (FYI-Dates are also scored) You can create and manage groups so whenever you want to go out with groups of people, the group is already preassembled.
With a new aspiration reward tool your sims can change aspiration. In the past this could only be done with a young adult sim while they were in college. However if your sim uses this object under the gold range their aspiration will automatically be change to "grilled cheese". They will only want to make, eat and talk about grilled cheese.
With respect to objects and building: I haven't used anything yet, however there are now 1/2 walls that you can build to break up a room a little bit, however it does not function in the same way as a full wall does i.e. if your kitchen has rotten food on the counter top and is separated from the dining room by a half wall, the dining room environment score will be affected. There is also a new driveway tool, new doors, windows etc.
I don't really like playing with cheats, but there are some new ones:
1 - You can give a newly created family additional funds without having to play with them. In the past you had to buy a house lot or a house, move them in and THEN use the motherlode cheat. So if I wanted to give Don Lothario $10,000 the cheat is "familyfunds Lothario 10000". You can insert a minus sign before the simoleon dollar amount to reduce a family's funds if you want.
2 - Give a family ALL the career reward items with "unlockCareerRewards".
3 - Maximize motives with "maxMotives"
This expansion pack is an "enhancement" pack. It takes simming to a whole new level.

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions Review

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every once in a while, a company manages to release a simple puzzle solving or trivia based PC game that hooks a dedicated fan base everywhere. The Incredible Machine series is one of those titles. The Even More Contraptions edition comes with approximately two hundred puzzles arranged in order of difficulty and an editor that allows you to make your own contraptions.
If you're not familiar with the Incredible Machine series, it's a layman mechanical engineer's dream. If you've ever watched a movie with a stereotypical nutty professor that has a contraption set up involving ten to twenty devices all reacting to each other in a "domino chain" to complete one simple task you already have an idea what the puzzles are like. In other words, a can opener with a can of tuna causing a cat to move which pulls a string that starts a fan which blows a wind chime that somehow turns on the TV. :D
That's how the puzzles are set up but many of the key components are left out and provided to the gamer to figure out how to get the device to work and complete the goals listed. Many times your solution is completely different from the given solution and the game doesn't limit your creativity. Over a hundred different pieces are including various gears, fire starting devices, animals, platforms, floating mechanisms, etc. Only a few picked by the original programmer are included in each puzzle but if you make your own puzzles you can pick from any device in the game.
There are also various websites set up by fans that allow you to download different creations. A fun game that you can keep coming back to as you attempt to complete the many puzzles provided.

My wife asked for this game after reading other reviews, so I found it here and bought it. I never thought a game could be so much fun and addictive. She will sit for nearly an hour and play this game! It is basically a bunch of different games within a game where you try to earn money to buy tropical islands and then outfit your islands with stuff for your monkey to use. Some of the mini games are: solitaire, a shooting game called "Puffer Popper" and "Cascade" where you must make fruit matches of three before the entire board "freezes." Once you buy enough items to make your monkey "happy" you will earn new games to play. Our 5-year old even loves to play the games - and she's good at some of them.

I bought this to have when young ones are at the house during the holidays. I opened it to play and had an unpleasant surprise. The opening scene was heavy strobing. Save The Dinos Review

Average Reviews:

The following review is from www.gamerdad.com
Save the Dinos
by Michael Anderson
September 06, 2007
Save the dinosaurs ... save the world!
Reviewed for PC.

Edutainment - this label is either a blessing or a curse depending on who you ask. But don't ask your kids, just let them play! True edutainment should be both entertaining and educational, but the more a game can teach you stuff while you are just chomping at the bit to keep going, going, going ... the better the game. Save the Dinos is a great example of Edutainment Done Right!
The game is based around the premise of 'Bone Monkeys' who like to run around and steal dinosaur bones, with you given a beach-ball firing cannon and tasked with protecting the dinosaur skeletons. Sounds like a completely toss-away casual game that could be played in a couple of minutes and never touched again - but because of the integration of an awesome model system, great quizzes and tons of bonuses it is terrifically addictive and fun for the whole family. The game features a tremendous 3D modeling of dinosaur skeletons called DinoMorph. This has been used in museum exhibits as well as on shows on the National Geographic and Science Channel networks, and provides stunning realism in the depiction and movement of all of the skeletal elements. And it does this while being able to run on most any decent household computer. The battles are pretty straightforward - you move around the circular dinosaur viewing area using the mouse and fire beach balls to scare away all of the bone monkeys. If you don't scare them off they will hop onto the dino and start hammering away trying to loosen up a bone to steal. And that is the game - three difficulties, ten dinosaurs per difficulty level. Yet there really is so much more. The game has real difficulty levels that will allow young or casual gamers to succeed as well as more experienced action game fans. The Dino Quiz is really critical to why you will love this game - you will learn things you don't know about dinosaurs and will have loads of laughs the whole time. Once you shoot one of the Dino Quiz targets you are launched into a quiz and told what cool thing you will unlock if you get the correct answer. These are things like bowling balls for the cannons, mega-healing stars, and even a boombox that causes everything to dance around - allowing you to bop all of the bone monkeys while they're grooving to the tunes. The quiz poses a question and has the answers floating down from the sky - it is a wacky sort of timed multiple choice quiz! The questions are not terribly hard, but there are likely to be ones you don't know or aren't sure of, and there are always at least two plausible answers to choose from. The other two range from unlikely to downright hilarious - this was one of those game moments where everyone wants to see what is happening and share the laughs. One example would be giving the current name of the dino formerly known as the Brontosaurus - there is the correct Apatosaurus there, but there is also a choice for 'the Dancing Dino'.
The worst thing is that the game is short, but don't let that distract you from the main message - Save the Dinos is the perfect blend of fun and learning that your kids and the rest of your family WILL enjoy! If your computer can run any recent kids games you will be able to play this, and it has multiple dimensions of interaction and play to keep you busy. It offers plenty of fun whether or not your kids are old enough to read without ever feeling too young for adults to enjoy. It is a rare title because it takes a very popular subject and presents it in a way that truly does offer something for folks of all ages!
There is a fine line that developers of true 'edutainment need to walk - too little entertainment and kids won't want to play and too little education and parents won't want to buy it. The best possibility is something that is fun for the whole family. That is exactly what Save the Dinos delivers - family friendly edutainment that is great for anyone in the house!

Friday Night 3D Bowling combines ease of gameplay with great graphics to create a very entertaining game. You cycle through a series of bowlers to select one to represent you, or you can customize a unique character. Then you pick a mode to start bowling. I strongly suggest starting out in the practice mode, in which your character bowls alone, before you advance to the arcade mode to play against an opponent. Eventually you'll play well enough to advance to the career mode and compete in tournaments. Gameplay is controlled entirely by the mouse. You point and click to aim the ball, set your bowler's feet, and determine how much spin to put on the ball. Then you click the left mouse button to determine the speed and accuracy of the ball. The details of the bowling alleys, the animations of the bowlers, the realistic action and sound effects are all outstanding.
