Assisted by a strong German heritage and a love of drinking beer outside the home, Milwaukee took to recreational bowling like few others. It was, relatively speaking, an immediate hit. Beginning around the turn of the century, lanes quickly began popping up - first a few lanes in a few pubs, then several lanes in multipurpose recreation complexes. As the sport became more popular, systematic governance became necessary and Milwaukee supplied many of the important pioneering leaders - serving as the headquarters for some of bowling's most important organizations. Probably even more importantly, Milwaukee supplied more than its share of great bowlers during the sport's heyday. Like everywhere else, bowling declined in popularity in Milwaukee as the millennium drew to its close. No longer were local bowling programs sufficiently profitable, nor were seventy lane bowling centers of much use. Yet bowling remains a significant part of Milwaukee's past and continuing culture. Thanks in large part to the prominence it gave Milwaukee when bowling was king.
Doug Schmidt admirably recounts the history of bowling in Milwaukee, principally by introducing the reader to the places, people and personalities that led the way. The stories run the gamut - from tiny basements with two lanes to giant bowling centers with scores of lanes, from quiet and careful businessmen to live-fast, die-young shooting stars. The story probably isn't entirely coherent. Nor will everyone find great interest here - indeed, I struggled through portions where the author highlighted seemingly endless game and series scores. But, Mr. Schmidt successfully retrieves the lost glory of one of Milwaukee's truly glorious pasts. For a time Milwaukee was very nearly the center of the world as far as bowling was concerned, and for an even greater period of time one could not speak of top rank bowling without considering Milwaukee. Mr. Schmidt shows why that was so and tells us who was responsible. Perhaps, this isn't the most important history, but it is fun and it's a piece of the puzzle.

Click Here to see more reviews about: They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital

A frozen rope. You will along with much more when you read They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital. From the thrill of the perfect strike to the agony of a ball gone astray, anyone who has rolled a ball down the lanes will find themselves or someone they know in the people, places and stories covered in this book.

In this authoritative and lively book, Doug Schmidt traces bowling's roots from a German religious rite centuries ago to the sport that made Milwaukee famous. From the taverns and saloons that housed recreational games to the sell-out crowds and million-dollar beer sponsorships of televised tournaments, this well-illustrated book covers both sport and city, charting the changing face of bowling over the century. Packed with memorable showdowns and improbable heroes, They Came to Bowl will take you back to the changing lanes of bowling in Milwaukee — and the sport as a whole.

* frozen rope=a ball rolled with excessive speed almost straight to the pocket; urethane split=2-8-10 or 3-7-9 split caused by sharp breaking point of reactive resin balls; drives=alleys; chicken tracks=string of strikes

Click here for more information about They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital
Rudy Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06157219123058151721noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3248996287958915545.post-62782999480661897762012-05-28T09:43:00.000-04:002012-05-28T09:43:00.871-04:00Bible Records of Caroline County, Virginia Families Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Herbert Collins has produced a great resource for research of family history in this part of Virginia.
A lot of highlighting to do here!
Hope to see his work at the library in Bowling Green.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Bible Records of Caroline County, Virginia Families

The family registers preserved in the Bibles of Caroline County families are one of the few remaining sources of vital statistics and family relationships of Caroline families. Yakuza 2 thankfully, and surprisingly, improves on much of what the first game offered in terms of gameplay, graphics, and story; and is a pretty satisfying brawler that will keep you entertained for some time. Playing once again as Kazuma, you traverse through a nicely detailed Japan, and are still looking to put an end to your days with the mob. The game looks solid for a late-in-life PS2 game, offering up some nicely detailed characters and environments, while gameplay-wise the moments of brawling are easy enough to pick up and get into, and other elements bear more in common with the gameplay of the classic Shenmue. There's a lot of secrets and extras to find and uncover as well, and as a whole, Yakuza 2 will keep you busy for a while at the very least. The game's story is also nicely crafted, and offers up some memorable moments and characters. The only real flaws with Yakuza 2 is that there isn't too much here you haven't seen done before, and while for a PS2 game it looks great, there are some noticeable graphical hiccups. Flaws aside however, Yakuza 2 is a surprisingly good improvement on the first game that ends up being an enjoyable and even more surprisingly immersive experience that PS2 owners should definitely check out.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Yakuza 2

One year ago, Kazuma Kiryu left it all behind…Marking the anniversary of his split from Yakuza life, Kazuma and his adopted daughter, Haruka, visit the graves of his Yakuza family. We received this as a present for my then 2 1/2 year old more than a year ago, for Christmas). He and his older brother adored it. Mack is a perfect place to put your Lightning McQueen. He can be driven in it both when the trailer is closed, and when it is open. When it is open, McQueen can drive onto his "bed" and watch his big T.V., go through a mini carwash, brush his teeth, get fluid from his refrigerator, or go on his lift. You can also load a second car into Mack as long as it is small, which makes for great fun according to my boys. If you have small children, a lot of the little parts will come off and get broken or lost (the foam roller for the car wash, and other bits of the carwash, the door to the fridge, the ramp into Mack, the stickers for Mack's eyes etc.), but you will still be able to play with the set as a whole.
A lot of other semi trucks have weak connectors which will break, but Mack is built to be little boy tough in this department, and has held up despite being thrown, stepped on, and used as a substitute for a drum.
This set has been through more than a year of abuse by three small boys and the semi still closes and snaps onto Mack just fine, and it is still played with on an almost daily basis. This set is loved by my 5 1/2-year-old, my 3 1/2-year-old, and my 1 1/2-year-old and whenever they manage to completely destroy it (which is still probably years off), I hope they are still making them so I can buy another one.
We liked this set so much we gave it as a gift and it was very well received by that little boy as well. Just make sure that you either get a set that includes Lightning, or buy a separate Lightning to go with it, because it needs Lightning and another car just won't do.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Disney / Pixar CARS Movie Toy EXCLUSIVE Mack Truck Playset with Die Cast Lightning McQueen

Mack open into Lightning McQueens action packed home on wheels .

Click here for more information about Disney / Pixar CARS Movie Toy EXCLUSIVE Mack Truck Playset with Die Cast Lightning McQueen
Rudy Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06157219123058151721noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3248996287958915545.post-54661796226951258682012-05-23T09:53:00.000-04:002012-05-23T09:53:00.089-04:00Schylling Musical Tin Kaleidoscope Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)This product looks great but the mirrors are so bad that the design is very fuzzy and you are unable to focus the image. It jumped right into the mechanics of bowling in good detail. Suddenly, after 30 or 40 pages, it just died. It almost looked like the author became bored and just wanted to throw another hundred pages on to make the book longer. A good portion was spent displaying almost every possible spare. First of all, with the title being Bolwing Strikes, was was there more space dedicated to picking up spares? I would have rather the author diagnosed precisely what caused the spare and options to correct your throw rather then spending a page on how to pick up the 6-9-10! Even stranger, the author assumes you're advanced enough that you throw a hook, yet spends several pages on ettiquette, how to score, and injuries. The first 20 or 30 pages have some helpful tips, but you're better off spending the money on practice. Best suited for someone who just bought a fingertip ball and wants to learn how to hook.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Bowling Strikes

"Without reservation, I highly recommend this book."--Earl Anthony
The single most important factor in bowling strikes consistently is the ability of a bowler to deliver an explosive strike ball, or the "power" ball. The secret of bowling the modern strike ball--the "squeeze" principle, or putting action into or spin on the ball--is explained clearly and simply within these pages.
Bowling Strikes also covers game fundamentals and recent equipment innovations and offers tips and strategies for mastering rhythm and timing, taking advantage of the "angle," converting difficult spares and "impossible" splits, and correcting common errors.
With more than 85 close-up photos and precise step-by-step instructions, plus special advice for the left-handed and senior bowler, this book gives all participants of the sport the confidence to take aim and up their average with ease.

Click here for more information about Bowling Strikes
Rudy Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06157219123058151721noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3248996287958915545.post-964291564927484772012-05-22T14:31:00.000-04:002012-05-22T14:31:00.710-04:00Portrait of the Walrus by a Young Artist (Harvest Book) Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)While "Portrait of the Walrus by a Young Artist" certainly contains some humerous passages, a likeable heroine and enough surreality to keep the reader engaged, the book lacks the depth nessisary to sustain the themes presented in its opening chapter. Really, reading the synopsis of the book and the first few pages is enough, as what follows reverts to cliche and cartoonish symbolism. Foos uses 175 pages to essentially state that normal life is a boring escape from the arduous personal experience nessisary to truely be an "artist." It's a theme present in countless other books, many of which take the subject on with some sort of insight or depth of perception lacking in this book. Chip Kidd's "THe Cheese Monkeys" for one contains many of the same ideas as this book, but his writing is consistent, his characters believable, etc.
This is not to say that this is a bad book, exactly, merely not the powerful testimate of an artist's coming of age as some reviewers suggest. It's recommended for anyone looking for something slightly off-kilter and entertaining. For more satisfying fare, you may want to check out "the cheese monkeys" or robert irwin's "exquisite corpse," both of which cover the same material foos does, but with more pleasing results.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Portrait of the Walrus by a Young Artist (Harvest Book)

Click here for more information about Portrait of the Walrus by a Young Artist (Harvest Book)
Rudy Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06157219123058151721noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3248996287958915545.post-83667049966426258192012-05-22T06:43:00.000-04:002012-05-22T06:43:00.880-04:00Wii Bowling Ball Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)It appears that the marketing & research department at CTA concluded that only right handed people enjoy wii bowling because this accessory was clearly not designed for left handed people. "Road Show: Art Cars and the Museum of the Streets" is a unique book discussing cars and how they have become a medium of artistic expression all their own. Discussing the history of the automobile and its evolution, authors Eric Dregni & Ruthann Godollei provide much in the way of intriguing thoughts and show many examples of people using their vehicle to say their message. "Road Show" is a must for those who have a shared appreciation for the automobile and modern art.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Road Show: Art Cars and the Museum of the Streets

The automobile has long been a symbol of status, power, and autonomy, and ever since King Tut rolled through Egypt on his golden-wheeled chariot, artists and drivers have dreamed up mobile masterpieces. A striking photographic tribute and social history, Road Show navigates a path across high and low art, showing how people around the world are transforming their vehicles into stunning folk art, obsessive collections, social commentary, and visionary performances. In this fascinating showcase, we see how Henry Ford\'s motto, "Any color as long as it\'s black," has been hung out to dry. From the Wienermobile to a hand-carved wooden Ferrari that drives in the canals of Venice to a giant red stiletto heel, Road SHow brings the "museum of the streets" to life.

Eric Dregni has written thirteen books, including Follies of Science, Weird Minnesota, Midwest Marvels, The Scooter Bible, Ads That Put America on Wheels, and Let\'s Go Bowling! He lives in Minneapolis where he teaches Italian and creative writing and plays guitar in the mock-rock trio Vinnie & the Stardusters.

Ruthann Godollei is a professor of art at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and her artwork has been exhibited internationally. American Century Review
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)"15 Stars" is an examination of how the careers, personalities, and goals of America's first 5-star Army Generals, George Marshall, Dwight Eisenhower, and Douglas MacArthur, intersected and intertwined at critical moments.
(Previous Generals of the Army were limited, at most, to 4-stars, however, it is generally considered that the highest military rank in the U.S., regardless of the number of stars associated with it, was that of General of the Armies of the U.S. Only two soldiers ever held this title: George Washington and John J. Pershing.)
The 5-star rank was created by Congress in late 1944. Before then a British Field Marshal was considered to outrank a 4-star U.S. General, regardless of his title or how many troops he commmanded. As the Second World War progressed British Field Marshals were being placed in positions of inferiority to U.S. Generals and the British Field Marshals were thus, technically, taking orders from their subordinates. The 5-star rank was intended to remedy this touchy situation.
(There is an apocyphal story that George Marshall objected to the new U.S. 5-star rank being called "Field Marshall" because, as its first recipient, he would then be known as "Field Marshal Marshall".)
The author tracks these three great American icons as they become America's premier soldier leaders during World War II (while often engaging in not always friendly maneouvering against each other): Marshall as America's top career soldier in the U.S.; Eisenhower as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe; and MacArthur as commander in the Pacific.
The author also follows their respective career trajectories after the war as well as all continued to hold positions of prominence during the early stages of the Cold War: Marshall as Secretary of State and proponent of what became known as the Marshall Plan (and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace); Eisenhower as U.S. President; and MacArthur as overseer of Japan and both hero and goat in the Korean Conflict.
The author's portrayal of these men as they interacted with each other, other leaders, and those around them is not all that different from the public's perceptions of these men: Marshall comes off as a calm, often cold, administrator even in times of great crisis; Eisenhower was the genial mediator; and MacArthur, perhaps the most brillant of the bunch, a strutting peacock, feisty bantam rooster, and wily hawk all tightly contained in a regal framework prone to demagoguery.
Nonetheless, the story is told in a fresh and engaging manner that makes it worthwhile reading for a greater understanding (even if not a complete one given the breadth of the subject matter) of how America came out on top in World War II and thereafter.

Click Here to see more reviews about: 15 Stars: Eisenhower, MacArthur, Marshall: Three Generals Who Saved the American Century

Click here for more information about 15 Stars: Eisenhower, MacArthur, Marshall: Three Generals Who Saved the American Century
Rudy Harthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06157219123058151721noreply@blogger.com0
