They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital Review

They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It will surprise virtually no one with a Wisconsin background to learn that Milwaukee played a key role in the rise of bowling as a popular recreation. Assisted by a strong German heritage and a love of drinking beer outside the home, Milwaukee took to recreational bowling like few others. It was, relatively speaking, an immediate hit. Beginning around the turn of the century, lanes quickly began popping up - first a few lanes in a few pubs, then several lanes in multipurpose recreation complexes. As the sport became more popular, systematic governance became necessary and Milwaukee supplied many of the important pioneering leaders - serving as the headquarters for some of bowling's most important organizations. Probably even more importantly, Milwaukee supplied more than its share of great bowlers during the sport's heyday. Like everywhere else, bowling declined in popularity in Milwaukee as the millennium drew to its close. No longer were local bowling programs sufficiently profitable, nor were seventy lane bowling centers of much use. Yet bowling remains a significant part of Milwaukee's past and continuing culture. Thanks in large part to the prominence it gave Milwaukee when bowling was king.
Doug Schmidt admirably recounts the history of bowling in Milwaukee, principally by introducing the reader to the places, people and personalities that led the way. The stories run the gamut - from tiny basements with two lanes to giant bowling centers with scores of lanes, from quiet and careful businessmen to live-fast, die-young shooting stars. The story probably isn't entirely coherent. Nor will everyone find great interest here - indeed, I struggled through portions where the author highlighted seemingly endless game and series scores. But, Mr. Schmidt successfully retrieves the lost glory of one of Milwaukee's truly glorious pasts. For a time Milwaukee was very nearly the center of the world as far as bowling was concerned, and for an even greater period of time one could not speak of top rank bowling without considering Milwaukee. Mr. Schmidt shows why that was so and tells us who was responsible. Perhaps, this isn't the most important history, but it is fun and it's a piece of the puzzle.

From the thrill of the perfect strike to the agony of a ball gone astray, anyone who has rolled a ball down the lanes will find themselves or someone they know in the people, places and stories covered in this book.

In this authoritative and lively book, Doug Schmidt traces bowling's roots from a German religious rite centuries ago to the sport that made Milwaukee famous. From the taverns and saloons that housed recreational games to the sell-out crowds and million-dollar beer sponsorships of televised tournaments, this well-illustrated book covers both sport and city, charting the changing face of bowling over the century. Packed with memorable showdowns and improbable heroes, They Came to Bowl will take you back to the changing lanes of bowling in Milwaukee — and the sport as a whole.

Bowling Strikes Review

Bowling Strikes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bowling Strikes was off to a great start. It jumped right into the mechanics of bowling in good detail. Suddenly, after 30 or 40 pages, it just died. It almost looked like the author became bored and just wanted to throw another hundred pages on to make the book longer. A good portion was spent displaying almost every possible spare. First of all, with the title being Bolwing Strikes, was was there more space dedicated to picking up spares? I would have rather the author diagnosed precisely what caused the spare and options to correct your throw rather then spending a page on how to pick up the 6-9-10! Even stranger, the author assumes you're advanced enough that you throw a hook, yet spends several pages on ettiquette, how to score, and injuries. The first 20 or 30 pages have some helpful tips, but you're better off spending the money on practice. Best suited for someone who just bought a fingertip ball and wants to learn how to hook.

"Without reservation, I highly recommend this book."--Earl Anthony
The single most important factor in bowling strikes consistently is the ability of a bowler to deliver an explosive strike ball, or the "power" ball. The secret of bowling the modern strike ball--the "squeeze" principle, or putting action into or spin on the ball--is explained clearly and simply within these pages.
Bowling Strikes also covers game fundamentals and recent equipment innovations and offers tips and strategies for mastering rhythm and timing, taking advantage of the "angle," converting difficult spares and "impossible" splits, and correcting common errors.
With more than 85 close-up photos and precise step-by-step instructions, plus special advice for the left-handed and senior bowler, this book gives all participants of the sport the confidence to take aim and up their average with ease.

It appears that the marketing & research department at CTA concluded that only right handed people enjoy wii bowling because this accessory was clearly not designed for left handed people. For lefties, the B button needs to be used with either your ring finger or pinky which is highly uncomfortable and frustrating to use. If you're left handed, either learn how to bowl right handed or skip this product.

There is the classroom and the locker room in sports-journalism education, and both are invaluable. No matter how many classes you take on the role of journalism in a democracy and the brilliance of Grantland Rice, you are at some point going to have to work for a newspaper or web site. Your employer is going to expect you to grab a notebook (and a recorder, and a camera, and a video camera) and come back with quality content. You are going to have to learn all the little tricks of the trade that make this job possible.
Field Guide to Covering Sports is a shortcut through your first few years on the job. It won't make you a grizzled veteran, but it will let you go confidently into almost any sporting event knowing where you need to be, what you need to look for and who you need to talk to.

How best to turn yourself from sports fan to professional sports journalist? From auto racing to wrestling, you\'ll find tips on the seemingly straightforward—where to stand on the sideline and how to identify a key player—along with the more specialized—figuring out shot selection in lacrosse and understanding a coxswain\'s call for a harder stroke in rowing. Preparing you for just about any game, match, meet, race, regatta or tournament you\'re likely to cover, Field Guide to Covering Sports is the ideal go-to resource to have on hand as you master the beat.

Willard and His Bowling Trophies Review

Willard and His Bowling Trophies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This novel is about fate and tragedy and people whose lives are connected by circumstance. It has all the Brautigan touches: poetry as prose, simple writing, great turns of phrase, and a story that is at once outlandish, hilarious, tragic and wholly original.
The story involves two couples and three brothers. One couple has a very healthy, happy relationship. In their apartment is Willard, a bird sculpture, and some bowling trophies they purchased at a sale years ago. These are second-hand bowling trophies. The other couple's relationship isn't as happy. The husband is depressed, and the wife, in an attempt to make him happy, participates in his S&M fantasies though she doesn't enjoy them. The brothers, as the story goes, were once good, upstanding citizens from a good upstanding family. That is, until several years ago when their bowling trophies were stolen, destroying their faith in humanity. They made a pact to recover the bowling trophies, whatever the cost, and began down a road of violence and murder.
You either love or hate Brautigan's work. I'm in the former camp. I don't know any writer so unique. Part of the beauty in his work is in the depth behind the simplicity. But like a simple painting, one person might look and say, "My seven-year-old could have done that," while another, like myself, finds that pretty much all of Brautigan's work speaks to them in some way.
Along with SO THE WIND WON'T BLOW IT ALL AWAY and AN UNFORTUNATE WOMAN, WILARD is one of Brautigan's tragic novels. In fact, in one of my favorite parts of the novel, the husband reads from a book of bits and pieces of Greek tragedies because only bits and pieces have survived through the years. But he's fascinated by them because he can feel the tragedy of the whole in just a few words. In the same way, in Willard we are given a thin slice of the life of these characters, but we feel the tragedy of the whole.

Bowling Execution - 2nd Edition Review

Bowling Execution - 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John Jowdy is well-known as a master bowling guru to many professional bowlers. When a PBA or PWBA member has needed assistance in elevating his or her game, John Jowdy has done so with proven results. John Jowdy is the familiar gentleman sitting with a foot long cigar in the first row of many televised matches watching, many time, his students. Therefore, Mr. Jowdy come to this book with much credibility. Many, but not all, bowling books are either too elemental for the intermediate or better bowler, or are filled with outdated information. Mr. Jowdy has bridged the gap between beginners and the better, experienced bowler with this book.
For example, I guess I would be considered a better than average league bowler with a 215 average. The night before my last league night, I read the chapters regarding the free armswing and the outward, rather than upward, follow-through, and put it into practice. The following night, I bowled a 299 game with a total of 16 strikes in a row over 2 games.
I would recommend this book if you are serious about improving your game.

Whether summer or winter, rain or shine, outdoors or indoors, there is no stopping a bowling game. It is a game for all people, big or small. It can be played as ninepin or skittles tabletop or alley - cannonball or West Country. Americans put a spin on the game by adding a tenth pin and playing tenpin or long alley bowling. Made of wood pieces. Each set contains nine plain pins, one twin-striped headpin, two balls, a cloth bag, and a link to instructions for many different games from ancient to modern. The hardwood bowling balls are choking-safe if little ones are around. The set is unfinished natural wood allowing children to paint or stain the pins for personalization. They can also be left unfinished and will withstand rigorous play. Skittles in a bag, featuring 5" inch pins, is perfect for those toddling toddlers learning about balance and accuracy. We are positive that the craftsmanship and durability will greatly impress you and your little one.

Strike Force Bowling Review

Strike Force Bowling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this game for $10 at Best Buy. It's a pretty fun game multiplayer, but playing against the computer can get boring fairly fast.
I'm not going to lie, the graphics are down right terrible and players are limited to very few movements and look choppy. However, we all know that graphics don't make a game. It's a fairly challenging game, with a lot of fun places you can bowl other than the ol' bowling alley, including the jungle and a pirate ship. Some of the characters are laugable as well, besides your average bowlers, you can also bowl as a skeleton or an alien.
All in all, Strike Force is a decent game, and it's nice to see that there is a bowling game out there. It could provide a fun Friday night with some friends, but don't expect to play it much alone. It's certainly worth the $10-$15 price tag.

Kinect Sports Review

Kinect Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got finished playing all of the sports in Kinect Sports and here is my evaluation:
1. Track & Field: This area includes a variety of different activities that work well with the basic body movements the Kinect can control. These include running , jumping, and throwing things (javelins & discus). I think young and old would both have fun with this! This may actually be my favorite activity in this game.
2. Bowling: Not as much control as Wi Sports bowling--but it is actually feels more like bowling when you can just stick your hand out to pick up the ball and then swing your arm to bowl. No controller to hold on to or push buttons. Once again this is an activity that would appeal to both young and old. Personally, I still like the bowling in Wii Sports better because of the more precise control.

3. Boxing: I like this better than the Wii Sports Boxing--but there is still some lag time and I just don't get the feel that all my moves are translating accurately. Plus, like an earlier reveiwer indicated it seems like punching wildly is actually a winning approach in this game. I do like how you can just hold your arms up to block--this felt very natural. I'm waiting for the Kick Boxing version because when you kick your legs in this activity your avatar kicks its legs--but they don't seem to translate to "hits" in the game.
4. Beach Volleyball: This one will take some time to master. It can get a bit confusing because there are several different techniques involved--jumping, hitting, and blocking. If you're tall--make sure you don't have a ceiling fan above you--or at least make sure it's not on!
5. Table Tennis: Once again it was fun to play without a controller in my hand but I felt there were a few times when the intensity of my hits were not reflected in what actually happened on screen. For example, when an opportunity comes up for a "smash" the game announces it and then actually does it regardless of whether I swung harder or not.
6. Soccer: Fun and interesting. You don't have to run around the field yourself. Your player magically appears where the ball is kicked to. Simple body movements control your kicks and blocks. Gray directional lines on the screen show the directionally options when kicking and your location when blocking.
Throughout the games the Kinect takes photos and short videos of your movements. These are played at the end of each game. The images are saved so you can share them with others. This feature will appeal to some and not to others. For example, I find the images of my son interesting and humorous--but I need to find out how to erase the images of me!
Adding a second player was extremely easy. If I wanted to join my son all I had to do was step in front of the TV and the Kinect added me to the in-play game. The graphics are also much better than the Wii! Kinect Sports looked great on a 40" HDTV. We don't even play the Wii on this TV because of how bad it looks.
Bottom line: If you have an XBOX already--adding the Kinect and Kinect Sports really adds a nice dimension to your video game experience. If you have young kids or older folks that have trouble remembering what buttons to push on a remote--it doesn't get any easier than the Kinect.
P.S. It is a neat and strange sensation to be standing in front of your TV and the avatar on the screen is doing the same movements that you are. You can sway, move your arms and legs, and dance, and the avatar mimics it. This alone makes for good entertainment!

Elite Atlas White/Blue Review

Elite Atlas White/Blue
Average Reviews:

So after getting the shoe, I made sure to use it soon while I was getting serious into bowling more often. At first i wasn't used to so much sliding so that took a bit to get used to. The size is true to typical shoe size and fits quite comfortably. I typically need a wide shoe but it fits quite with the typical shoe size. The sliding material starts to get dirty quickly but I have not yet felt any difference in the slide. The slide material is on both shoes so right or left handed bowlers can use them.
As a bowler: League, casual.
Bottom Line: Good overall buy.
Good shoe for beginning-intermediate bowlers for a relatively low price.

Fast Lanes Bowling Review

Fast Lanes Bowling
Average Reviews:

To be honest, owning a bowling game wasn't that high on my "must have" list, but I got this game as a stocking stuffer this year and was surprised at how much I find myself playing it. It has essentially become my new "solitaire," letting me play when I am bored and want to kill some time without getting into a 5 hour marathon. The production values are surprisingly good, particularly for a bargain priced game. The graphics, sound, and physics are all very well done. I kind of wish there were more "arcadey" (is that a word?) style modes of gameplay, but that might just be the console owner in me talking. Internet play might be fun, too, though bowling isn't exactly a head-to-head sport. You could practically play by e-mail, now that I think about it. A word of caution, though. The game can be very tough, and the need for accurate timing on the controls is a must. I find that if I have too many programs running on my computer it can cause the game to stutter a bit, making for missed throws. If you have a beefier system than mine (1 ghz, 256k of RAM, Geforce 2MX), you shouldn't have much trouble, if any. Overall, an excellent value, particularly if you like video game bowling.

One of my godchildren saw this and wanted it for Christmas. I had my doubts as it seemed really pricey for a fairly simple toy. But the figures are wonderfully interesting and the boys play with them for hours, setting up scenarios, building play castles for them, etc. They play rough with them and so far all are intact. Yes, they play the bowling game with them, too. It has become a much beloved toy in the household.
