Shadowman's Tricks & Traps Review

Shadowman's Tricks and Traps

I was intriqued by the "tricks and traps" aspect of the book. I've role-played for a while and a friend had the grimtooth trap books which he'd throw at us now and then. This shadowman book has more logic puzzles and extended puzzles - find key A to open door B to get key C etc. - than simple traps. I've used several of the simple puzzles in my D&D 4 campaign so far as well as one of the extended ones. My players except for the barbarian liked them even though they felt really stupid on one where they walked right by the treasure without noticing it. Anyway I had fun trying to solve the puzzles by myself and my players liked the break from the usual 50' corridors.

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions Review

The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every once in a while, a company manages to release a simple puzzle solving or trivia based PC game that hooks a dedicated fan base everywhere. The Incredible Machine series is one of those titles. The Even More Contraptions edition comes with approximately two hundred puzzles arranged in order of difficulty and an editor that allows you to make your own contraptions.
If you're not familiar with the Incredible Machine series, it's a layman mechanical engineer's dream. If you've ever watched a movie with a stereotypical nutty professor that has a contraption set up involving ten to twenty devices all reacting to each other in a "domino chain" to complete one simple task you already have an idea what the puzzles are like. In other words, a can opener with a can of tuna causing a cat to move which pulls a string that starts a fan which blows a wind chime that somehow turns on the TV. :D
That's how the puzzles are set up but many of the key components are left out and provided to the gamer to figure out how to get the device to work and complete the goals listed. Many times your solution is completely different from the given solution and the game doesn't limit your creativity. Over a hundred different pieces are including various gears, fire starting devices, animals, platforms, floating mechanisms, etc. Only a few picked by the original programmer are included in each puzzle but if you make your own puzzles you can pick from any device in the game.
There are also various websites set up by fans that allow you to download different creations. A fun game that you can keep coming back to as you attempt to complete the many puzzles provided.

Tiger Eye Curse Of The Riddle Box Review

Tiger Eye Curse Of The Riddle Box
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box" is based on a novel by New York Times bestselling author Marjorie M. Liu. The cut scenes tell the story of Dela releasing an ancient warrior who was magically imprisoned in the riddle box, and the two them trying to escape assassins sent by the entity who had originally binded him.
The first time I played it, I watched through all of the cut scenes to enjoy the engaging story. On my numerous replays, I skip the cut scenes to get right to the puzzles.
The real strength of this game is in the puzzles. There are some hidden-object scenes which are nicely done and very much part of the storyline. Then there is a wonderful variety of mini-games -- creating words, decoding messages, unscrambling images, matching objects, forming patterns -- plus a "bejeweled" type of game you play when Dela needs to get a psychic reading from an object. (One of the puzzles, in which you need to put the pieces of a dragon image in their proper place by rotating by column or row, is a bit too challenging for me, I've never solved that one.)
Since I tried "Tiger Eye", I've downloaded and played a handful of other puzzle games and haven't found any with the variety and replay-value of this one.
The growing romantic relationship between Dela and the warrior might be a bit suggestive for children.
My only complaint is that this is Part I. The game ends with a preview of the story in Part II and I don't know when it will be out!

The Gollywhopper Games Review

The Gollywhopper Games
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Twelve-year-old Gil Goodson and his parents have had a grueling 18 months of legal battles, press invasions and tarnished reputations in their Orchard Heights community. Gil's father, a former employee of the Golly Toy & Game Company, was falsely accused of embezzlement. And although the jury finds him innocent, a big chunk of the community refuses to accept it. Even Gil is the victim of emotional and physical harassment at school, and is chased off his sports teams. Thinking it won't ever get better, he begs his dad to move. However, the family can't afford it. Then Gil gets an idea.
To celebrate their 50th anniversary, Golly Toy & Game Company announces a huge event --- The Gollywhopper Games! Open to young people ages 11 to 15, contestants will compete in a series of clever puzzles and physical stunts to win a huge collection of prizes. Gil makes a deal with his dad: If he wins, then the family moves away from Orchard Heights forever. Easy, right? Not exactly. Since Gil's dad isn't an employee anymore, eligibility won't be an issue (though it could turn into a big problem later). But what definitely will be an immediate problem will be getting into the competition.
Twenty-five thousand kids will start off --- including 500 instant wins hidden in Golly Toy & Game products, 20,000 winners in a random drawing and 4,500 winners chosen at the front door the morning of the competition. It's the last one Gil is shooting for, as he lives mere blocks from the stadium where stage one of the competition is being held. He loads a backpack and grabs a sleeping bag, ready to camp out in order to be first in line. Unfortunately, unplanned events get in his way.
But, of course, Gil gets into the competition. The first round of games in the stadium will whittle down the contestants from 25,000 to 10. These finalists are instructed to arrive at the Golly Toy & Game Company building the next morning for the big fun to start. And what an amazing, incredible, adventurous day they have in front of them --- mind-boggling puzzles and physically demanding stunts hosted in a colorfully enchanted, dream-like warehouse, all in a race against time and each other to capture the huge prize. Win or lose, Gil is going to have the time of his life.
Jody Feldman's first book for kids is so much fun! The high energy level spans the entire book, from the introduction of lovable and relatable Gil, through the clever puzzles and amazing tasks, all the way to the all-to-soon ending. Feldman reveals her colorful imagination, intricate smarts and writing talents on every page. It's almost like the magical WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY meets the brain-tickling reality show "The Mole." Readers can have even more fun by trying to figure out the puzzles on their own before learning what the characters do. I highly recommend THE GOLLYWHOPPER GAMES, which will leave fans waiting impatiently for Feldman's next book.

Are you ready?

Gil Goodson's future happiness depends on winning the Golly Toy & Game Company's ultimate competition. If Gil wins, his dad has promised that the family can move away from all the gossip, false friends, and bad press that have plagued them ever since The Incident. Inside the toy company's fantastic headquarters, Gil will have to master trivia, solve puzzles, and complete physical stunts—and he'll have to do it better than all of the other kids competing.

Oh, and did we mention that Gil's every step—and every mistake—will be broadcast on national television? Hold on tight, because the ride of his life is about to begin!
