(More customer reviews)Earl Anthony was the greatest bowler of all time, in my opinion. He won 41 P.B.A. titles, 2 A.B.C. Masters titles, and 7 Senior Tour titles. Ranking second is Walter Ray Williams, Jr. So let Anthony teach you how to bowl. This book was written by a lefthander, but a lot of the negatives of the pictures were flipped so it appears that Anthony is bowling right-handed.
I received Earl Anthony's Championship Bowling for Christmas in 1984. Great book. With co-author Dawson Taylor, Anthony teaches the basics - footwork, timing, armswing, release, follow-through, and the mental game. He also teaches spare shooting, including split making. Specifically, Anthony talks about The Seven Fundamentals of Championship Bowling - relaxation, rhythm and timing, squareness to the line and ability to hit the target, correct ball fit and ball balance, application of squeeze action, consistent wrist action and full follow-through, and speed control. I learned a lot by reading this book. The secret to bowling well is fundamentals, believe me. Not some fancy bowling ball with a half ounce of side weight or some fancy wrist device. FUNDAMENTALS. He also talks about how to correct faults in your game, how to practice, and one of my favorite topics of all - THE ETIQUETTE OF BOWLING. Yes, that's right - PROPER ETIQUETTE. How many of you serious bowlers out there have been DISTRACTED by people who don't know proper bowling etiquette? You know what I mean - you're practicing and you're on the approach ready to take your first step and some idiot on the lane next to you runs up there with total disregard for you and distracts you, forcing you to step off the approach and start your routine all over again. And the saddest thing of all is that this idiot doesn't even know that they distracted you. They're totally oblivious to it. It happens to every bowler. When this happens to me, I almost turn into Marshall Holman. It drives me NUTS. Holman is one of the greatest bowlers of all time and a fierce competitor and I don't blame him one bit for all the times he got distracted on television. I can relate to it.
So there.....this chapter makes Earl Anthony's Championship Bowling a COMPLETE book that really is all you need to learn how to bowl and improve your game. Myself, I'm a self-taught bowler with an unorthodox style (almost a carbon copy of Holman's game), but I periodically refer back to this book whenever I'm in a little slump or just need a refresher course. I highly recommend this great book.

SQL Queries for Mere Mortals(R): A Hands-On Guide to Data Manipulation in SQL (2nd Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)It's easy to find a good book that will provide definitions and examples for inner joins vs. outer joins, subqueries, etc. You can read them and understand the definitions and/or examples, however, when you come across a 10 - 20 line query in your job or have to create your own complicated query from scratch you realize just how tenuous your gut-level understanding of this mysterious thing called SQL really is.
This book will give you the gut-level understanding you so desperately crave - and need if you are working with databases.
The authors provide clear explanations of the various SQL constructs for both the SQL Standard and real world levels (which are oftentimes two different things). They further deconstruct real-world issues by also describing the anomalies between some of the more popular databases.
But you can get all this from just about any other good SQL book. Where this one really shines is the way it leads you from simple to more and more complex queries via well-crafted and well-explained examples. They progress from simple queries to queries containing expressions to filtering data with a 'where' clause to inner joins to outer joins to unions to subqueries to aggregate functions to grouping data and then filtering that data by 'having' clauses. They end up by covering updating, inserting, and deleting data.
They give tons of examples that illustrate how to solve common problems and the more trickier "gotchas" that you're likely to run into. These examples occur both within the meat of the chapter, i.e. where they are explaining terms and concepts, and at the end of the chapter where they describe how and why they put the queries together the way they did.
The queries are all against 5 databases containing from 6 to 13 tables each. The databases, tables, and all of the queries are contained on a CD ROM that accompanies the book.
Each chapter ends with 3 or 4 problems for *each* of the 5 databases. If you really want to learn how to write complex queries then do as many of the problems as you can. The solutions are on the CD so if you get stuck you can see how the authors solved the problem. The more you do, the more you will find that you can craft fairly complex SQL queries "from the hip". As one who did all of the sample problems I can assure you that that statement is no lie.
I cannot recommend this book enough.

(More customer reviews)Mention the title "Wii for Dummies" to the general game playing populous and you might receive a chuckle. "Wii for Dummies? The Wii is already the most simple thing on the planet!" they might say. But Kyle Orland's book is not for this demographic. It is targeted toward the other group that Nintendo has been trying to woo: people who have haven't ever owned a video game system (or at least not in a while). For these people the Wii is not the intuitive piece of hardware Nintendo claims. It's a complex piece of technology that requires hardware and software setup, has deep system preferences menus, has features that don't explain what they do, and has an array of games that vary in quality. Wii for Dummies covers all these bases.
The Nintendo Wii is easy to learn, but learning implies a teacher. Wii for Dummies is aimed directly at those people who want a Wii but have no one to teach them. It explains (with accompanying photos!) how to set up the hardware on a TV and how to navigate the system's software. It explains the intricacies of creating Miis, how to use the various Channels, how to buy games on the Virtual Console, tips on browsing the web, and even a nice history of the Nintendo company.
Wii Sports and Wii Fit are also covered in great details in Wii for Dummies, two of the games that are the main draw for the non-game buying market. Kyle Orland also makes recommendations on games for different groups: the non-gamer, partis, and families. These mini reviews not only explain a bit about the game but make recommendations on who the game both is and isn't intended for (though some of the reason are tenuous). Between these recommendations and the Virtual Console recommendations, the new Wii owner is bound to find something to make their investment worthwhile.
If you haven't played games in a long time (or ever) and need a teacher, Wii for Dummies is a well written and well organized guide that's sure to answer all your questions.
