(More customer reviews)Bowling Strikes was off to a great start. It jumped right into the mechanics of bowling in good detail. Suddenly, after 30 or 40 pages, it just died. It almost looked like the author became bored and just wanted to throw another hundred pages on to make the book longer. A good portion was spent displaying almost every possible spare. First of all, with the title being Bolwing Strikes, was was there more space dedicated to picking up spares? I would have rather the author diagnosed precisely what caused the spare and options to correct your throw rather then spending a page on how to pick up the 6-9-10! Even stranger, the author assumes you're advanced enough that you throw a hook, yet spends several pages on ettiquette, how to score, and injuries. The first 20 or 30 pages have some helpful tips, but you're better off spending the money on practice. Best suited for someone who just bought a fingertip ball and wants to learn how to hook.

(More customer reviews)I never thought in a million years that I would end up an avid bowler; but that all changed when my younger brother began participating in Special Olympics bowling. I try to show up as often as possible to his games to cheer him on and a couple of times after his practice I played a few additional practice games with him for fun. Wouldn't you know it, I eventually caught the bug and I have been bowling ever since.
I saw this miniature book at the book store and decided to buy it in order to learn a little more about the game. Although the book is a short read, it is a well informed and interesting look at the history of bowling, complete with some really cool retro art work and pictures. It includes sections on `Innovations,' `Bowling Around the World,' `The Greats,' `Bowling Culture,' etc. This would make the perfect small gift - especially as a stocking stuffer - for anyone who loves the sport.

(More customer reviews)In its best moments, and there are many of them, Shannon Olson's poignant "Children of God Go Bowling" delves deeply into the dilemma of young adult loneliness. Her self-named protagonist -- that alone makes "Bowling" courageous -- not only wonders whether she will ever find someone special with whom to share her life, she gives voice to some of the most serious questions we could ask ourselves. Do "any of us know what we really want." Even if blessed with such knowledge, how do we manufacture the strength to fully put "our hearts" into living. That Olson can address such personal questions with ironic humor, sarcastic self-observation and self-deprecatory candor are the signal strengths of this easily-read novel. "Children" is marred only by a contrived, melodramatic conclusion that uses a shopworn literary device to assist her protagonist achieve the epiphany necessary for living a full life.
It's unfortunate that Olson's somewhat mawkish conclusion diminishes the first two-hundred pages of her novel. "Children" bristles with anger, frustration and subterranean hope, as the protagonist Shannon, aided by two understated, quirky and compassionate therapists, battles her domineering mother and wrestles with a nagging and seemingly perpetual sense of loneliness. Her mother, Flo, casts an omnipresent shadow over Shannon's life. If the daughter speaks openly about her sadness, her mother dismisses it as insignificant compared to her troubles. When Shannon determines to break away and establish the boundaries necessary for a healthy relationship between an adult daughter and her mother, Flo bemoans being cast aside. Ever sharp-tongued, Flo criticizes Shannon's wardrobe, mocks her eating habits (McDonald's comes in for special ridicule), disparages her apartment and demeans her career. In so doing, Flo is never so happy as when she can, with a passive-aggressive quip, micromanage Shannon's life.
As both siblings and friends marry and create families, Shannon is left ever more aware of her freak-like status as a single woman. Her constant companion, Adam, confuses her; is he just a "friend," or does his constant presence signify something greater. Readers quickly recognize that Adam fulfills the identical psychological functions Flo satisfies. Fastidious, proper and anal, Adam happily offers to organize Shannon's closet, including alphabetizing and paper-clipping mounds of debris Shannon refers to as paperwork. What is apparent to readers is obscure to Shannon, who never seems to muster the temerity to openly question Adam about the nature of their relationship.
Shannon's despair is always tinctured with humor. When her therapist, Dr. Douglas, whom Shannon believes receives inspiration from such diverse television resources as ESPN and the History Channel, asks about what she does with her spare time, she responds that "the only pieces of equipment required for my favorite hobbies" are "the remote control and the credit card." Dr. Douglas suggests she "leave the nest and explore the richness of life;" to Shannon, "life had proven to be a big, fat artery-clogging vat of hollandaise sauce." She's a shy, slightly-overweight Minnesota Catholic in a land of svelte Lutherans, where "quality" people are those who aren't "kind of different."
Shannon's failures are endearing, and she is undaunted by setbacks in her persistent quest for companionship and happiness. She's quite the opposite of the glamorized New York City single woman; there's no "sex-in-the-city" for this protagonist...just drive-through meals and doing laundry with her carping mother. Shannon Olson's anguish is not spectacular, but persistent, not energizing, but energy-sapping. Yet she never stops looking for love. The author, Shannon Olson, should have been content to leave her namesake in that earnest, quietly humorous quest rather than give her some answers in a contrived conclusion. When the protagonist finally picks up a bowling ball in the novel's conclusion, we are pretty well tipped off if she's going to roll a gutter ball or a strike.

The Chasm Companion: A Field Guide to Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado (Revised) Review

(More customer reviews)I have read "Crossing the Chasm" and "Inside the tornado" by Moore, both very good books! When I first laid my eyes on this book I had a slight feeling that there might be risk of overlap. I think Wiefelds saw this as well and got a good endorsement by his colleague Moore - to state that this is a complement, not a repetition. That the book was published after the dot-com, in 2002, felt reassuring though - a lot of good lessons were probably to be learned for the reader. Ok, so I had high expectations, but felt a slight doubt.
After reading the book I have two statements:
1. The book delivers some more hands on the two books it referrers to, some really good lists. All in all about nine pages of good ROI-of time material.
2. I am very sad that Wiefelds did not listen to his own good recommendation: don't talk about your product as you know it - know your target group! Wiefelds should know that I am not planning on reading this book for fun - I want a high gain/time-quota, not 352 pages that take a week to read, when a 20 page leaflet would be sufficient! Because the book is repetitive - very!
To summarize:
The book offers some good hands on tips and lists, but should have been a 20 page leaflet.

This book showcases some of Deford's best work as a journalist. Although some of the articles are a little dated, his style and amazing use of language still shines. The pieces included in this book are easily some of the best writng available. Any inspiring journalist could learn a great deal from this collection of writings.
Deford never holds anything back, and he is never afraid to speak his mind. I personally enjoyed the in-depth look at Bobby Knight. But, there are many other treasures in this candid book.
Overall, this is an excellent book and quite a fast read. Deford's witty and extremely articulate writing style allows you to flow right through the book. This is a masterpiece of writing, and a true pleasure for any sports' fan. The Best of Frank Deford is simply the best.

Accounting Information Systems (For Bowling Green State University) Review

(More customer reviews)This is one of the worst books I've ever read. The headings and subheadings are often very confusing; what should be
subheading is often listed in the same font/size/color as the its corresponding heading. It is very hard to dicipher how the authors are
classifying things at times. Some of the classifications are
very poor and not even parallel. For example, on page 88, the authors classify data processing into four "general approaches":
batch processing using sequential files, batch processing using direct access files, batch processing with real-time data collection, and real time processing. The headings on page 88 are ALTERNATIVE DATA PROCESSING APPROACHES and BATCH PROCESSING USING SEQUENTIAL FILES. (These headings have exact font/size/color. ) It would be much more helpful to students if the print the four approaches in one font/size/color which is different from the overall header of "ALTERNATIVE DATA PROCESSING APPROACHES."
After reading the following 6-7 pages of discussion, I could not help shaking my head about the poor classification. To me, data processing should simply be classified in 2 categories: batch and real-time. THe authors added more classifition using another criteria of file structure. However, they mix these categories together. What they called "batch processing with real-time data collection" is really just half batch and half real-time (which in the aggregate should probably be called batch processing).
So, in essense, the authors' classification of the four approaches is exactly the same as the following classification of cars:
(1) red cars with 2 doors
(2) red cars with 4 doors
(3) half-red, half-white cars
(4) white cars
The discussion about each approaches are also confusing.
For example, on page 95, under the heading "Batch processing using real time data collection", the author wrote "The systems examined thus far describe a process by which transactions are sent in batches to a central location for conversion to magnetic media. A popular alternative is to capture transaction data at its source in real time. Real-time processing is also called "on-line" because the system, in this case the data collection portion of it, is available to the user at all times. By distributing data input capability to users, certain transaction errors can be prevented or detected and corrected at their source. The result is a transaction file that is free from most of the errorss that plague data processing. Figure 2-39 illustrates this approach. Real-time data collection can be used with both the batch/sequential and the batch/direct access update techniques. In both cases, however, the transaction file produced in the data collection stage must be a direct access structure."
This is just one example. I am from a computer science and MIS background, and can kind of figure out what the authors are trying to say, but many students are confused
by this book, and are complaining about this book (which is why I am writing this review).

Garden Bowls Review

(More customer reviews)My spouse and I recently returned from a vacation in the U.K. Among the significant mementos we wished to bring back was the game of bowls. Many years ago (40 or 50 to be exact), a neighbor who had roots in Wales brought back a set of bowls to the US, and were a big hit in the neighborhood. During several trips there myself, I either forgot about them, or was unable to locate a set, and instead settled for the usual touristy trinkets. When we returned from our latest trip, I went online to Amazon.com and lo, and behold was a set of garden bowls by Jaques of London. This was good, as we didn't have the hassle of buying them in the U.K. and paying to have them shipped back or cart them, as they would have been too heavy for our luggage.
The bowls arrived in a timely fashion, in good condition, are a high quality item(s), and myself and my family have enjoyed playing games with them very much. I was so pleased that I telephoned the US representative for Jaques, and expressed my pleasure. -GB

Diminished Democracy: From Membership to Management in American Civic Life Review

The author points out that in the 19th century, many of the local groups that people joined were chapters of national or transnational organisations. This was part of their attractiveness. Joining a local group gave comradely ties with others across the nation, that you had never met, and probably would never meet. How peculiar was this to the US, as compared with the European countries from which many of these people recently left? Is there any way to quantify this? A little unfair to ask, perhaps, because of the sheer amount of research needed to flesh it out. But the above questions arise naturally out of the research summarised in the book.
Historians have asked if the US was qualitatively different from other countries. ("Vineyard of liberty" etc.) The issues raised by the book give us another way to address the question. Perhaps Americans were more inclined to join such nation spanning groups because as an immigrant, footloose people, if they did not have centuries of binding to the same soil and neighbours, they wanted some other and multiple means of belonging? Was the striking success of the groups in some part due to such inchoate urgings?
Another way to test would be to look into the history of similar groups in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Skocpol also points out that from the 1960s onwards, the membership of such groups in the US fell significantly. She advanced several reasons. But there is one possible reason for some of the decline that she did not mention. From the mid 1950s, TV became pervasive. Remember that joining a volunteer group is done in your recreational time. TV is a notorious competitor for that time, due to its convenience and cheapness. Plus, and more specifically, if one of your reasons (possibly unconscious) for joining a national group is to be part of a larger world, then TV assuages that to some extent. Granted, some of this may be illusory, but so what?
