(More customer reviews)It is hard not to make comparisons between this and Wii Bowling. And essentially, you shouldn't. Wii Bowling has its own strengths and weaknesses and as such a comparison between the two would be rather unfair. But for the sake of truly getting the point home, I will.
This game is the cruder, prettier, and more technical sibling of Wii Bowling. You bowl similarly to the way you bowl on Wii, including using the Sixaxis motion to control speed. Honestly though, similarities stop there. You play as one of initially two characters with others being either bought or unlocked through gameplay. Each person comes with their own lane, two costumes (sometimes and rarely though a third). Each lane has it's own music and look and are done surprisingly well. The game is in 1080p so hi-def is no problem here. The hardest part is actually the controls. There is a rather steep learning curve on here, which if you enjoyed Wii Bowling for its "pick-up and play" approach you may not enjoy this game. The easiest way I have found to control your bowler is to grab the controller sideways, use your index and pinky to control R2 and L2 respectively and the thumb for X. All that aside, once you get a comfortable position on the controller, the game is pretty simple. Placement on the line and the angle of your shot are controlled by the Sixaxis. Your spin controlled by L2 and R2 and X advances your shot screen (from your line placement screen, to your angle screen, to your shot screen). Pull back your arm and let it rip. The strength of your shot is determined by the force of your arm. Also, each person has stats as well as the balls which effects how you will want to bowl (someone with an A in power but a D in spin will be a straight shooter but this can be overcome somewhat with an A+ ball, but not by much). As I said, a little more complex than Wii's controls (noting the sarcasm?).
The second aspect is the humor in the game. It is a delightfully funny game, but it is definitely a little more adult than some families would like. Several double entendres abound here. Controls combined with this humor definitely does not make this game for kids. However, if you are mature enough to get the jokes and coordinated enough to handle the controls, this is definitely a superb game that fills the niche well for PS3 owners looking for a bowling game. Also, another little fun perk, any additional bowlers come with their own lanes. For me, this is a huge since Wii Bowling feels a little monotonous. Sadly, there is no demo available for this game that I have found, but at 10 bucks; I'd say it is a fair gamble. In a side-note, this is made by Idol Minds (the studio that made PAIN if that helps with you understanding the humor in this game.
In short, the funny and well animated characters, the array of lanes to play on, and the variety of stuff to do on top of the base bowling game make this a solid entry in to your PS3 library. It may not be as pick-up and play friendly as the kiddier Wii game, but it IS a very well made game with only a few minor technical issues (the biggest of which is sometimes loading up without sound that is simply fixed by a restart of the game). Give it a spin, it really is a fun game and once you start doing well you will feel like you really accomplished something.
